Calico Mining Town, CaliforniaFounded in the 1880s, this Californian silver mining town had a thriving population of 1,200 most of whom worked in one of the 500 mines. The district became one of the richest in the state with its wealth from silver, borax and some gold. Only 20-odd years later, silver prices bottomed out and borax mining moved to Death Valley, leaving Calico as only a ghost of the former bustling town. |
